About Us

The Scarsdale Congregational Church Nursery School (SCCNS) was established in 1958 as a non-sectarian, diverse preschool whose goal is to:

  • Guide children to play together happily and constructively

  • Promote the development of a positive self-image

  • Instill a desire to learn and explore new horizons

  • Increase an awareness and appreciation of our environment

  • Improve coordination and motor skills

  • Encourage verbal expression

  • Teach children to learn to listen to others and to follow directions

  • Create companionship and friendship with other children and adults

  • Allow a child to enjoy being a child

Where child’s play is the basis for a young child’s future social and educational success

There is a well-qualified Head Teacher as well as additional Teachers in each classroom; a Floating Teacher assists in class as needed. The preschool program offers many wonderful enrichment opportunities for students. A music specialist teaches the children rhythm and music appreciation. Spanish education is an important part of the curriculum as is Creative Movement, and Musical Theater Performance class.

Students enjoy field trips as well; sometimes visiting a local farm, library, or the Greenburgh Nature Center; other times welcoming firefighters or police officers to our campus to learn about their jobs and tools, as well as how they help keep us safe.

Holidays are an important part of our preschool program, as they teach the children to learn and celebrate various cultures and religions. The 4-year-olds especially enjoy the Thanksgiving Feast where they bring food and invite their parents to share in the celebration. The Holiday Tea, in December, is  beloved tradition, where families are invited to see the children’s delightful performances followed by delicious refreshments!

The Nursery School is structured around the belief that the fullest value of preschool can come only if parents are involved and growing too. Parents are most welcome to visit the school at any time.

The Nursery School Board is composed of parent volunteers and the Nursery School Director. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in board activities, attend monthly Board meetings, as well as attend Parents’ Night and other programs of interest.

Parent Involvement

Meet the Director

I would like to take this opportunity to tell you about our school and give you a bit of background on myself.

The school’s philosophy is centered on learning through play to build a strong educational foundation for our students. Learning through play gives a young child the opportunity to thrive physically, socially, cognitively, and emotionally. Our curriculum is planned by excellent teachers and staff and is designed to reach all students in creative ways. Each program offered at SCCNS teaches the whole child.

I am so proud to be a part of this warm and nurturing school. Ever since I can remember I have had a passion for teaching children. I attended PACE University in Pleasantville NY, where I received a Masters in Elementary Education and Special Education. In my career I have taught levels K-2, 3 and 4 year old classes. I have three daughters who attended The Scarsdale Congregational Church Nursery School. Ten years later I had the pleasure of joining the staff as a Teacher and Head Teacher and now as Director. In my years teaching at SCCNS I have grown just as much as my students. I am thrilled and excited to take on my new role at this amazing school.

I am looking forward to getting to know you and your children.

Sincerely,
Melissa DiCostanzo
